Over 2,000 PDP members decamp to Kogi APC

HOPES of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State to wrest power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been further boosted with the defection of over 2,000 members of the ruling party in the state.

APC leader in the state, Prince Abubakar Audu, while receiving the defectors in Ogbonicha, Ofu local council, said the PDP stranglehold on the state was gradually ending. He declared that the APC would set the pace for others on the true path to democracy in Nigeria.

The former governor, who was thrilled by the large turnout of acclaimed former PDP members, said the APC would use none-violent approach to take over power in the state. However, he commended Governor Idris Wada for his political maturity in giving the opposition an opportunity to grow alongside in the state.

Audu, who lost to Wada in the 2011 governorship election, said he has been fascinated by the incumbent governor’s leadership qualities, which have accounted for his support. He denied working for PDP in the state to perpetuate its hold on power, stressing that APC was seriously working to win the governorship in 2016.

“Look, I know Wada for over 40 years now as a personal friend,” he declared. “When I lost election to him, I felt the process that led to his victory was not fair; I then proceeded to the tribunal and even while at the tribunal, he visited me in my house, extending the olive branch.”

In view of all these, Audu said he would continue to advise the governor where necessary, admitting that Wada has such sterling leadership qualities that party differences would not enable him not to acknowledge. However, he noted that the whole idea of politics is for the progress of the state.

“I welcome you all into the APC. We in APC will conduct ourselves in democratic manners and will continue to set the template for a better Nigeria,” he stated. “We are almost there and recent events have shown that APC is the preferred party in Kogi State.

“Our major preoccupation at the moment is to consolidate on the gains recently recorded by APC in the state. The decamping of some prominent members of the PDP and now this round of decamping here in Ogbonicha are heartwarming, fascinating and unprecedented.”
