Both soldiers are attached to the 423 Battalion of the Elele Barrack in Rivers State.
Lieutenant Colonel Mustapha Anka, the spokesman of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday, described it as most unfortunate.
Anka said ongoing investigations would unravel the circumstances that led to the shooting.
The incident was said to have occurred at about 10pm on October 13, during a dinner held to mark the 2014 Legal Year with the Governor Seriake Dickson in attendance.
The soldier was said to have snatched the service rifle of his colleague and shot him dead at his duty post.
The soldier who killed his colleague had arrived from the Elele Military Barrack in Rivers State after collecting his duty allowances.
Sources at the Government House said two other soldiers on duty left the post briefly and the killer soldier capitalised on the opportunity to shoot his colleague.
A source said: “He immediately ran away with the rifle and boarded a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, and headed towards Hospital Road.
“The sound of the gunshots attracted the policemen on duty at the Banquet Hall.
“The policemen, however, intercepted and stopped the tricycle and apprehended the fleeing soldier.
“The policemen also found the body of the soldier in a pool of his blood at his duty post.”
A security source, however, said the arrested soldier, who was taken initially to the Yenagoa Police Area Command, had been handed over to the Joint Task Force for further investigation (NAN).
